Establish what all year actually describes
The MFS lived-apart rule concerns a married-filing-separately return and the living arrangement during the entire tax year used for IRMAA. It is not a general exception for couples who are currently separated, maintain separate bank accounts or spent some months in different places. A reader should identify the return year on the notice before deciding whether the factual question has been answered. The premium year and tax year are ordinarily different.
Imagine that Lina receives a 2026 notice based on her 2024 separate return. She moved to a separate residence in 2025. That current arrangement alone does not establish that she lived apart from her spouse for all of 2024. Another reader with a similar present-day address pattern may have different relevant-year facts. Comparing the whole timeline, rather than the situation on the day of the request, is the necessary first step.
SSA begins with an assumption about separate filers
SSA's procedure states that when IRS supplies the MFS filing status, SSA assumes the spouses lived together at some point in that tax year and applies the accelerated table. A beneficiary who alleges living apart throughout the year can seek a new initial determination under the specific procedure. SSA obtains an attestation under penalty of perjury and, when the conditions are established, uses the ordinary individual table for that person.
This is a consequential factual statement. A calculator's radio button does not submit an attestation or establish that the exception applies. It changes a planning assumption so the arithmetic can be understood. Readers should not treat an educational result as evidence of SSA acceptance, and the site does not recommend how to characterize uncertain facts. If the situation is complex, obtain clarification from SSA and an appropriately qualified adviser before making a sworn statement.
Keep the request individual to each spouse
The change applies to the beneficiary who provides the required attestation. SSA's instructions do not automatically apply one person's attestation to the other spouse. If both spouses want the treatment, each needs to address their own determination and required statement. Joint household planning can make the financial issue visible, but it cannot turn two administrative records into one request or eliminate the other person's procedural requirements.
For example, Lina and her spouse may both have separate returns and Medicare coverage. Even if their living-arrangement facts are the same, their income amounts, notices and coverage can differ. Lina should retain her own notice and confirmation of what she submitted. The spouse should do the same. A household worksheet can record that there are two requests without storing identifying numbers or copies of private documents inside an educational application.
Do not replace the special request period with a generic deadline
The specific lived-apart procedure permits a request beginning with the IRMAA determination notice and continuing through the end of the affected premium year. SSA describes potential good-cause consideration for requests made after the allowed period. That does not mean every SSA procedure uses the same timeframe. Formal reconsideration has its own rules, and a life-changing-event request can involve other timing considerations. The applicable route must be identified before quoting a deadline.
Lina can create a private calendar showing the notice date, affected premium year, when she contacted SSA and any further deadline SSA identifies. If she is also disputing another issue, she should ask how to preserve that issue rather than assuming the lived-apart request pauses every other period. This guide does not extend deadlines or determine good cause. The notice and current official instructions should be consulted promptly, especially when a year-end or review period is approaching.
Understand the arithmetic after the facts are established
Using the ordinary individual schedule can make a substantial difference compared with accelerated MFS. For a supported 2026 illustration, $120,000 of Medicare MAGI falls in the first ordinary individual surcharge band, but in the accelerated schedule it receives the much higher intermediate MFS surcharge level. The comparison assumes the same person's income and coverage. It does not establish which schedule SSA should use without the necessary factual and procedural basis.
Do not divide or combine the spouses' separate returns to produce that comparison. Each separate-return AGI and tax-exempt interest belongs to the corresponding person. The app's household estimate can show both people, but each person's income and enrollment must be supplied independently. A reduction in the monthly rate also does not automatically establish a full-year refund amount: the relevant determination, period and account adjustments need confirmation from SSA.
Bring a focused question and accurate records
Before contacting SSA, identify the notice's return year, filing status and income data. Review whether living apart throughout that specific year is the issue, and ask what current documentation or attestation process is required. SSA's manual includes historical form-line references; a taxpayer should use the actual year's return and SSA's current instructions rather than searching a new form for an old line number that has moved. Accuracy is more important than matching an outdated layout.
Keep a copy of the information actually provided, the date and the response. Ask how to address any separate data discrepancy or adverse determination. The MFS overview explains the schedules, while the procedural comparison separates new initial determinations from reconsideration. Neither guide can attest facts for a reader, act as their representative or predict an outcome. No identifying information needs to be entered here to understand the distinction.
